Phillies Roster Shakeup: Ranger Suárez returns, Ruiz hits IL, Walker heads to the ‘Pen
Ranger Suárez is back, José Ruiz is down, and Taijuan Walker is heading to the bullpen — all part of a busy roster shuffle as the Phillies prepped for Sunday’s series finale against the Diamondbacks.
Ranger Suarez Returns
After missing nearly two months with a back injury, Ranger Suárez will finally make his 2025 debut Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. The 29-year-old lefty made just one Spring Training appearance before being shut down, but he was lights-out in four rehab starts: 1.08 ERA, 24 K, 5 BB, and a .175 opponent average across two levels.
Ranger Suarez returns today for the Phillies
With free agency looming after the season, the stakes are massive. If Suárez gets back to his early-2024 form — the one where he posted a 1.75 ERA in his first 15 starts, then he could very well be one of the biggest names on the market at the end of the year.
Why Activate Ranger Suárez Now? Aaron Nola’s Neck
The Phillies had to pull the trigger on Suárez’s activation a day earlier than expected after Aaron Nola reported neck tightness just 45 minutes before first pitch Saturday. Suárez was made active just in case, but Nola gutted it out and ended up tossing six scoreless innings in his first win of the season.
He said afterward that he felt normal, so crisis averted.
José Ruiz to the IL
With no real roster flexibility — most of the bullpen is out of options — the move to activate Suárez was tricky. The odd man out ended up being José Ruiz, who landed on the IL with a neck spasm.
That buys the Phillies some time, but if everyone stays healthy, a tougher decision will come soon. Ruiz had been serviceable in early-season mop-up duty, but the injury made for a convenient roster solution.
Carlos Hernandez Survives — For Now
Before Ruiz hit the IL, the presumed cut candidate was Carlos Hernandez, who’s sporting a 6.92 ERA and has allowed 24 baserunners in just 13 innings. He’s out of options, so exposing him to waivers would’ve been risky. For now, he hangs on.
Taijuan Walker Moves to Bullpen
After Saturday’s win, manager Rob Thomson confirmed that Taijuan Walker is headed to the bullpen — at least for now.
Walker did his job in April as a fill-in starter, posting a solid 2.54 ERA across six outings. He’s been tweaking his approach after a velocity dip, and the results have been encouraging. This isn’t necessarily a demotion — it’s more of a “break glass in case of emergency” role. With five months of baseball ahead, Walker is now the unofficial sixth starter.
Think of it as a modern-day insurance policy — one that just so happens to have a career 3.97 ERA.
