Passer rating graph exposes just how much Patrick Mahomes stat-padded in Super Bowl 59

Look, I’m completely fine with how things played out in the Eagles’ beatdown of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. The final score was 40-22, but anyone who watched the game knows exactly what happened — once the Eagles took their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, Mahomes took the opportunity to stat pad. And in doing so, he may have quietly re-written his legacy.

That might sound like hyperbole now, but trust me, nitwits like Nick Wright and the army of statsexuals will swear Patrick Mahomes was actually kind of good in Super Bowl LIX. Maybe not this year, maybe not next, but give it a decade. Once we start relitigating Mahomes’ career, you’re going to hear fools argue that the loss wasn’t really on him.

It absolutely was — and this new passer rating graph all but proves it.

Heading into the back half of the third quarter, Patrick Mahomes was sitting on a passer rating under 20. After that late TD to Xavier Worthy, he crawled up to 37.8. Then came the fourth quarter — when the game was already over — and Mahomes suddenly posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating, because the Eagles stopped caring. That late surge bumped his final line to a wildly misleading 21-of-32 for 257 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

A statline that deserves to be mocked every time it’s brought up.

This is a textbook case of “stats don’t tell the whole story.” So many analysts survive off numbers alone — mostly because half of them don’t even watch the games or study film, despite that being their entire job.

If you ever hear anyone try to argue that Mahomes wasn’t awful in Super Bowl LIX, just pull up this passer rating graph and publicly shame them until they repent for their sins.
