Commanders throwback jerseys completely miss the mark — no logo, no legacy

The Commanders dropped their big alternate uniform reveal this week, and if you’ve got a soft spot for Washington’s glory days, they want you to believe this is for you.

Burgundy and gold? Check. Gold facemask? Check. Stripes on the helmet again? Sure. But the one thing that actually mattered — the logo that defined the franchise for decades — is still missing.

And it’s not coming back. Because the Commanders, despite all their talk about “honoring the past,” don’t have the guts to do it properly.

This so-called tribute to their Super Bowl era is just another half-hearted nod to a legacy they’re too afraid to fully embrace. You can bring back the pants, the stripes, the color scheme, but if you’re slapping a generic “W” on the side of the helmet and pretending it carries the same weight as the old Redskins logo, you’re lying to your fans. Point blank.

Doug Williams didn’t hoist the Lombardi Trophy in a Commanders jersey. Joe Gibbs didn’t build a dynasty under this rebrand. Yet here they are, parading a costume without the courage to acknowledge the identity it came from.

Commanders Continue to Dance Around Their Own History

Washington’s decision to revive this throwback look is clearly aimed at rekindling the good vibes of the 1980s and early ‘90s, but they’re trying to do it without acknowledging the actual team name or emblem that made that era iconic. Let’s not pretend this is some bold move. It’s spineless. Ownership wants to market nostalgia without taking on the heat that comes with fully embracing it.

You can’t say you’re honoring the past while erasing the very symbols that defined it. The Commanders look like they’re playing dress-up in someone else’s legacy.

Worse, there’s even speculation that they might make these their permanent jerseys. Great, just what the NFL needs: a franchise that keeps clinging to the past without the bravery to tell the full story.

Philly Doesn’t Forget—and We Definitely Don’t Buy It

From a Philly lens, this is laughable. The Eagles, a franchise with real continuity and pride, don’t need to hide behind throwback gimmicks. Washington? They’re out here doing cosplay while trying to rewrite their own history. Imagine if we tried to bring back the Kelly greens but slapped a new bird logo on the helmet and pretended it was the same. Fans would riot — and rightfully so.

So go ahead, Commanders. Wear your fake throwbacks, pump up the nostalgia, and pretend your glory days weren’t tied to a completely different name and logo. But don’t expect anyone — especially not here in Philly — to respect it.

Because you can’t honor a legacy you’re too afraid to name.

  1. The legacy of the name “Redskins” is every bit as much a racist pejorative as w͏e͏t͏b͏a͏c͏k͏, c͏h͏i͏n͏k͏, o͏r͏ n͏i͏g͏g͏e͏r͏. Washington made the right decision to leave the logo off.

  2. Why would Philly have to hide behind any gimmicks? Their identity is not a pejorative. Bad comparison.
