The Phillies desperately need Nick Castellanos to ‘get right’ down the stretch
Even after dropping two-of-three in Cincy this week, the Philadelphia Phillies enter tonight against the Washington Nationals with a comfortable five-game lead in the NL East standings.
They are staring down their fourth-straight postseason appearance and second-straight division title but obviously, there are still problems to solve down the stretch.
The most glaring one is Nick Castellanos.
Nick Castellanos has been brutal since the All-Star Break
Look, I’m not one of those Nick Castellanos haters. He passes the eye test 10/10 times and we have all seen these funks where he basically goes into “swing through it” mode until he finally breaks out of it.
We’re all on the Pain Train, sitting right next to Casty, as he works himself out. That’s fine with me. He’s still one of the few guys on this Phillies roster that I actually trust in October. A bad month isn’t going to change that and he’s definitely not the the problem in the lineup right now, but he’s one of them for sure.
Since the All-Star break, Nick Castellanos is hitting a miserable .186 over 22 games. Of his 16 hits, only four have gone for extra bases. He’s driven in just two runs this entire month and that’s while hitting in prime RBI territory.
The bad habits have returned. We’re witnessing Casty chase breaking balls no where near the strike zone. His hips are loose, he’s making weak contact, and when pitchers get ahead, they can literally throw breaking balls out of the zone until Casty gets himself out.
Unfortunately, 2025 as a whole has been rough for my guy. Pull up his Baseball Savant page and it’s a sea of blue. We’re talking league-bottom numbers in chase rate, whiff rate, strikeout rate, and walk percentage.
It’s fucking miserable to watch, brother. I know.
Will the real Nick Castellanos please stand up
When the Phillies signed Castellanos before the 2022 season, Dave Dombrowski called him “one of the premier hitters in Major League Baseball” and it wasn’t even a stretch to make that type of statement at the time. Castellanos has always been a grinder, and a slugger.
He was brought here to be the right-handed force that protects Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. The press release touted his league-leading doubles and extra-base hits from 2018-2021, plus that .309 average with 34 home runs and 100 RBI in his final season with the Reds.
That guy hasn’t shown up nearly enough in Philly. When he’s hitting, it’s not for power. When he’s not hitting, he’s not working counts or drawing walks. The grinder they paid for has been replaced by a free-swinger who’s popping out and rolling over grounders.
While no one expected him to win a Gold Glove, his defense has fallen off too. Limited range, bad jumps, and balls dropping in front of him are becoming far too frequent. The highlight-reel grabs that used to make up for his flaws are a thing of the past.
The Phillies desperately need Nick Castellanos to get back to business down the stretch. Having some type of consistency from him will be crucial in October and after a trade deadline that really hasn’t moved the needle offensively, this has almost reached “top level of priority” given his recent struggles.
Dombrowski’s decision not to add another legit bat at the deadline makes this sting even more. Ramon Laureano could have been an option, but he went to San Diego. Instead, the Phillies got Harrison Bader. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a fine defender, but he’s not fixing the hole in the middle of the order.
Bader’s not taking Casty’s playing time either. His contract and veteran status keep him safe from the bench in a way a younger, cheaper player wouldn’t be.
The Phillies Need That Castellanos
The hope is Alec Bohm’s return and JT Realmuto’s hot streak can provide enough right-handed pop while Castellanos sorts himself out. As with any reliance on consistent offensive production from this lineup, it’s at best, a gamble.
Alec Bohm’s never been a consistent power threat, and Realmuto could easily cool off as fast as he heated up. What this team really needs is the Castellanos they thought they were signing. Casty needs to be the guy who punishes teams for pitching around Harper, who turns on 100 mph heat in the playoffs, who can carry the lineup for a week at a time.
That guy’s been MIA this year. If he doesn’t show up soon, the Phillies’ path to a World Series gets a whole lot tougher.
