Ben Griffin says he “overdosed” on Creatine before BMW Championship meltdown
If you thought you’d heard every excuse in golf for a disastrous opening stretch, Ben Griffin just raised the bar.
Griffin, one of the PGA TOUR’s most consistent players this season and a legit Ryder Cup hopeful, opened his final round at the BMW Championship on Sunday with a four-putt triple bogey from inside five feet.

Then he went OB off the tee on the second hole for a double. Then another bogey on the third. Fans watching were stunned but his explanation after the round was even crazier.

The Creatine “Snowball” Incident
Griffin admitted he essentially overdosed on creatine mid-round. He explained that he was at the bottom of his supplement tub, broke up a clump of powder that had hardened into a “snowball,” tossed it in his water bottle, and accidentally swallowed the whole thing right before teeing off.
That resulted in full-body shakes, tremors, and total panic.
“I’ve never overdosed on creatine before, but I think I did in the moment,” Griffin said. “I literally felt like I had tremors… I four-putted one and then on two I was freaking out and didn’t know what to do.”
Thankfully, his caddie forced him to chug water and calm down, and from there he flipped the script.
From Disaster to Strong Finish
After the nightmarish start, Griffin locked back in and played lights out, with seven birdies in his final 12 holes to card a one-under 71.
What looked like a total implosion turned into a gritty rebound. He finished T-12 at the BMW, good enough to sit sixth in the FedEx Cup standings and punch his ticket to East Lake.
Ryder Cup Complications
The Tour Championship doesn’t count toward Ryder Cup points. Griffin sits in 9th place, just outside the automatic qualifiers, meaning Keegan Bradley will have to decide whether or not to make him a captain’s pick. Given the “creatine snowball” story, you can imagine the takes flying already.

The good news for Griffin? A strong finish at East Lake could keep his stock high. The bad news? Swallowing powder clumps like a college freshman at GNC isn’t exactly the best way to sell yourself as a steady Ryder Cup anchor.
