Roster Moves: Eagles take a flier on LB ahead of preseason finale
The Eagles are still making moves as they trim the roster down before Week 1, and their latest addition is linebacker Chance Campbell, a player who comes with more connections than credentials at this point in his career.
Eagles Lean on Coaching Ties
Campbell was originally a sixth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans back in 2022, where he worked under Bobby King — now the Eagles’ linebackers coach. King clearly vouched for his guy, and Howie Roseman was more than happy to throw him into the mix as Philadelphia looks for linebacker depth.
It’s no secret the Eagles are thin at the position with Nakobe Dean recovering from a torn patellar tendon. That alone makes Campbell a worthwhile body to bring in for the final week of camp.
A Career Derailed by Injuries
The problem with Campbell has never been talent — it’s been availability.
- His entire rookie season was wiped out by injury.
- He managed just four games and three tackles in 2023.
- Then he lost all of 2024 to a torn ACL.
So yeah, this isn’t exactly a proven veteran walking through the door. The Eagles are banking on potential here, not production.
College Numbers Worth Noting
Before the injuries piled up, Campbell was a monster in the SEC. In his lone season at Ole Miss after transferring from Maryland, he racked up 110 tackles, six sacks, 13 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. That kind of production in college is what keeps him hanging around NFL rosters despite barely seeing the field as a pro.
What It Means Moving Forward
Let’s be clear: this move doesn’t guarantee Campbell a roster spot. He’ll need to prove himself in a hurry if he wants to stick with the Eagles beyond the preseason finale. But if he can stay healthy and flash even a fraction of what he showed at Ole Miss, there’s a path to him carving out a depth role on this defense.
For Howie and the Eagles, it’s a no-risk signing. If Campbell flames out, no harm done. If he finally puts it together, Philly just found another linebacker on the cheap.
