New Mexico pulled off a wild trick play vs Michigan and the Eagles should take note for the Tush Push
New Mexico wasn’t beating Michigan on Saturday night, but they did give us what might go down as one of the slickest trick plays of the 2025 season.
Down 17-0 late in the first half, the Lobos had 4th-and-1 from the Wolverines’ 9-yard line. Everyone in the building thought quarterback sneak or power run. Instead, running back D.J. McKinney took a direct snap, tight end Dorian Thomas slipped into the end zone, and McKinney floated him an easy touchdown. Michigan’s defense was completely frozen.

They went on to lose 34-17, but that play was pure gold.
The first thing that came to mind watching it was the Eagles’ Tush Push. Imagine lining up in the usual short-yardage formation where everyone in the stadium knows Jalen Hurts is about to get shoved forward for two yards.
Only this time, Saquon Barkley takes the snap and casually flips it to Dallas Goedert or DeVonta Smith sneaking free behind the pile.
It’s unfair enough trying to stop Hurts on 4th-and-1. Now picture defenses having to also account for Barkley tossing a touchdown pass out of the same look.
Genius, really.
Hurts already vultures plenty of TDs, but this wrinkle would give Barkley a few highlight throws to go with the rushing numbers. It’s the kind of evil genius tweak Nick Sirianni should have waiting in their back pocket for a big moment.
New Mexico might’ve lost the game, but they just handed the Eagles a potential cheat code.
