A Heavyweight Clash
This wasn’t some soft clincher. The top two teams in the East went toe-to-toe in a match that felt every bit like a playoff game. Cincy threw everything at Philly’s backline early, but 19-year-old homegrown keeper Andrew Rick came up massive with two highlight-reel saves in the first half to keep things scoreless.
Quinn Sullivan nearly gave Philly the lead in the 10th minute, smashing the crossbar from distance. Then came Damiani’s breakthrough with a perfectly timed leap, a bullet header, and silence across TQL Stadium.
Playing Short, Standing Tall
The real test came at the hour mark when Olwethu Makhanya picked up his second yellow and was sent off. Thirty minutes, on the road, down a man, trying to clinch the playoffs, put them in a bad situation but that’s where they showed their grit.
In came Frankie Westfield, Indiana Vassilev, Mikael Uhre, Jeremy Rafanello and the Union locked the game down. Cincinnati poured forward, but the Union clogged the midfield, won every scrap ball, and walked out with their 11th clean sheet of the year.
The Big Picture
The Union now sit with five games left on the schedule, chasing not just a playoff run but the Supporters’ Shield. Philly leads the league with 54 points, just ahead of San Diego and Cincinnati, and a late-season showdown at Vancouver looms large.
Union Remaining Schedule:
- Sept. 13 @ Vancouver Whitecaps (9:30pm ET, Apple TV)
- Sept. 19 vs. Orlando City
- Sept. 23 vs. San Jose Earthquakes
- Sept. 27 @ New England Revolution
- Oct. 18 vs. Nashville SC (Decision Day)

The Union clinched by grinding one out on the road against one of the best in MLS, relying on a 19-year-old keeper, a 21-year-old striker, and a backline that refused to fold.
Seven playoff trips in eight years. A shot at the Shield. And a team that looks battle-tested for what’s ahead.
