Rafael Marchan clutches up in the ninth, 3-run blast lifts Phillies over Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani was in vintage form through five innings Tuesday night. He held the Phillies hitless, struck out five, walked one, and generally looked untouchable before having his pitch count managed out of the game.

Once Ohtani was gone, Philly’s bats broke loose.

The Fightins flip the script.

Down 4-0 early thanks to power from the Dodgers, the Phillies rallied in the sixth inning. Bryce Harper doubled in two runs, Brandon Marsh launched a two-run homer, and Max Kepler followed it up with a solo shot to give Philly a 6-4 lead.

Los Angeles didn’t fold. Ohtani himself smashed his 50th home run of the season in the eighth. The Dodgers then tied it 6-6 on a sac fly after loading the bases, giving fans hope that the comeback wouldn’t matter.

Then Rafael Marchan smashed a three-run homer off Blake Treinen with two outs in the ninth, completely flipping the game on it’s head. After that, Jhoan Durán came in and closed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 31st save.

Enter Rafael Marchan.

The Fightins have now taken the first two games in LA, both comeback wins, both at the expense of a bullpen that looks like it’s allergic to protecting leads.

Since July 4, the Dodgers have blown 18 games after holding a lead, and this week alone, their relievers have coughed up 14 runs in 8 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are rolling.

Fresh off clinching the NL East on Monday night, they’re treating September like a victory lap while still playing with urgency. Marsh is swinging it, Harper is driving in runs when it matters, and now Marchan is out here writing his name into the story.

Game 3 is Wednesday:

Phillies send Jesús Luzardo (14-6, 4.03) against Dodgers ace Blake Snell (4-4, 2.79). Philly’s already guaranteed the series, but a sweep at Dodger Stadium would send an even bigger message with October around the corner.
