Hard Pass: Doug Pederson says he’d ‘consider’ joining Eagles coaching staff if asked

Saw this Doug Pederson news floating around the timeline yesterday and all I could think was, Thursday night truly broke our collective brains, didn’t it?

Doug Pederson would ‘consider’ joining Eagles coaching staff

A few things here.

First off — no one will ever make me hate Doug. I’ll love that man until the day I die. You win a Super Bowl in Philly, that’s unconditional respect forever. That said, I don’t think he’s the answer to the Eagles’ offensive problems right now.

Second, let’s be real — he wouldn’t come in to replace Kevin Patullo as offensive coordinator. It would have to completely fall off the rails for Nick Sirianni to even consider that. The actual phrase being tossed around was “offensive consultant,” which, if we’re being honest, doesn’t mean a damn thing.

We’ve had offensive and defensive consultants come and go over the years. None of them did anything. Vic Fangio was with the team in 2022 as a defensive consultant. The result? They still couldn’t stop above-average quarterbacks.

Consultants don’t shape a team’s offensive or defensive identity. At best, they offer opinions the coordinators can either take or ignore. They don’t call plays. They don’t have any power.

So no, it doesn’t matter how many consultants the Eagles bring in — the fundamental philosophy of this offense won’t change. That’s just not how it works in the NFL or in any consulting role, period.

And listen, Doug’s the man, but I wouldn’t exactly call him an offensive mastermind. He went through the same growing pains as Sirianni when he lost his coordinators. Then, in his final year, he basically said “screw it,” didn’t even hire an OC, and got fired after the season.

Now, I’ll admit — the idea of Doug and Sirianni on the same staff is kind of awesome. The only two coaches to ever bring a Lombardi to Philly, teaming up to chase a third? That’s a hell of a story.

The one legitimate upside of hiring Doug Pederson is that he probably wouldn’t get poached for a head coaching job anytime soon. He’s a little older now, he’s already led two different franchises, and he doesn’t seem overly eager to jump back into that grind. But hey, I could be wrong.

In the end, I’d pass on Doug. Love him to death — always will — but right now, I just don’t see the fit.
