Michael Carter II Eagles

Eagles send receiver to Jets for much-needed cornerback depth

The Eagles have finally traded a wide receiver, albeit much further down the depth chart than AJ Brown. John Metchie is heading to the Jets in exchange for cornerback Michael Carter.

The Eagles are sending out a 2027 sixth-rounder and getting back a 2027 seventh-rounder in the deal:

Carter has shown flashes of being a high-end slot defender, combining quickness, toughness, and strong tackling instincts that make him a fit for Philadelphia’s defensive style.

During his time in New York, Carter carved out a reputation as one of the more physical nickel corners in the league. He handled slot receivers, contributed in run support, and brought energy to a Jets defense that often relied on him in key coverage situations. In 2023, he put together his best season yet, showing the ability to disrupt routes and make stops in open space.

The 2024 season was a tougher one. Carter struggled with consistency and was part of a defense that often left its corners exposed. Even so, his athleticism and experience in multiple coverage schemes make him a strong depth option for the Eagles, who have been searching for answers in the secondary amid injuries and uneven play.

For Philadelphia, the move makes sense. Carter brings starting experience, versatility, and a competitive edge that fits the team’s defensive culture. He can immediately step in at nickel or rotate outside when needed. If he settles into the system and finds his rhythm again, this could be one of those under-the-radar trades that ends up strengthening the defense when it matters most.

Based on Howie Roseman’s in-season track record, I can’t say I have the highest expectations. But, damn, this secondary needs all the help they can get right now.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
