Mississippi Monkeys: One shot dead by startled mother, one captured by authorities, and one is still on the loose
The Mississippi Monkeys story continues to captivate the American people and, consequently, has us here at TLL in a chokehold. This is now the fourth installment of this story and, keeping with tradition, it has continued to get crazier.
For a quick refresher, we were made aware of an update on the Citizen App, saying that a lab monkey was on the loose after a semi-truck crash in Mississippi.
The first post about it was a pretty basic article, honestly. Incredibly tame compared to most things I write. Several of the monkeys escaped after the crash, while others were trapped inside their cages.
Authorities said all but one of the infected animals have since been “destroyed,” but one monkey was still on the loose as of 2 p.m. Officials warned that the monkeys require full protective gear to be handled safely.
In the end, it was revealed that three were on the loose. Now, it seems that two have been apprehended, with one meeting its permanent end.
A Heidelberg, MS, mother shot one of the monkeys dead in her backyard while another was corralled by the authorities, leaving one monkey still at large:

God damn, what a rough way to go out.
I’ve seen some people criticizing the mother for busting a cap in that monkey’s ass, and, quite frankly, I find that incredibly unfair. While the diseased status of the primates is still up for debate, that’s something you have to err on the side of caution with.
When this is the published warning about the monkeys, pulling out a gun and shooting it is really the only option for any citizen, especially a mother trying to protect her children. God forbid she ensure her kid is safe by sliming out a potentially diseased primate with a mean streak.
“The monkeys are approximately 40lbs, they are aggressive to humans and they require PPE to handle,” one of the sheriff’s posts states. “The monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.”
Of course, I’m disappointed she didn’t reach out to me first instead of the authorities. There is a cover-up afoot with this story, and handing it over to the establishment instead of the independent journalist who’s been all over this story is a crucial mishandling of key evidence.
Also, we could have easily cooked and eaten that monkey. Me personally, I would have either fried it up or made a monkey gumbo. Either way, it’d be fun for the whole family.
I’ve worked closely with representatives from PETA on this story and, while I usually find them ridiculous, I’m very much on their side with this story. Diseased or not, a full necropsy on all non-human primates captured or destroyed is essential in the interests of freedom of information and public safety.
They already destroyed five of them because they were “mistakenly” branded as diseased by a supervisor. Again, I understand the abundance of caution in scenarios like this for everyday citizens, but if these monkeys belong to you, you simply have to know what’s going on in your circus, so to speak.
We have yet to see how authorities will handle these remains or the other primate that was captured, but, based on what’s been happening so far, I doubt it will be the most transparent process.
Now, our attention has to turn to the last monkey standing. I don’t know where it is or what it’s up to, but I’m rooting for it now more than ever. This primate is the last of its cohort to taste freedom and feel American soil under its paws.
Good luck and Godspeed, my primate friend. Take over the watch. One day, you’ll see your brothers and sisters in Valhalla. I just pray that day does not come too soon.
