Eagles defense delivers a biblical beatdown on Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions

We have officially reached a point where Vic Fangio’s defense is carrying this football team like a bouncer dragging a drunk guy out of Stateside Live!. The Eagles won another low-scoring rock fight on Sunday night, beating the Detroit Lions 16-9 at The Linc in yet another game defined by a dominant defensive performance.

There are issues but at least for right now, I really don’t care if the offense hasn’t figured shit out yet. When you hold a top-three NFL offense to nine points, bully Jared Goff into submission, and force a team of that caliber to go 0-for-5 on fourth down, that’s artwork.

0-for-5 on Fourth Down.

Sunday night, the Eagles delivered a “no means no” message to Dan Campbell and the Lions on five separate occasions. Detroit had nothing going for them. The Eagles defense threw them into an industrial shredder. Five attempts. Five failures. Five moments where Dan Campbell stared directly at a defense that was eating souls and said, “Nah, I’m good, let’s try again.”

It was disrespect. Nakobe Dean said it. And honestly, he’s right.

WATCH: Eagles stop the Lions FIVE TIMES on fourth down

Here’s how those fourth-down stops went down:

AttemptSituationResult
4th & 1, DET 48Gibbs swallowed whole by Moro OjomoTurnover on downs
4th & 2, Fake punt from DET 43Jalyx Hunt sniffed it outTurnover on downs
4th & 5, PHI 32Goff throws an apology into the turfTurnover on downs
4th & Goal, PHI 3Jaelan Phillips heat-seeking missileTurnover on downs
4th & 3, PHI 45Quinyon Mitchell erases St. BrownTurnover on downs

This was only the third time since 1991 a team has gone 0-for-5 or worse on fourth down. Two of those belong to Dan Campbell.

Jared Goff…

Jared Goff came into Philly completing 74 percent of his passes. He left completing 38 percent. He looked like he was throwing with oven mitts on. The Eagles defensive line deleted passing windows from existence:

  • 20 QB pressures
  • 5 passes batted at the line

Amon-Ra St. Brown, one of the most dominant receivers in football, was targeted 12 times and ended up with 2 catches.

Amon-Ra St. Brown gets punked by Eagles defense after spending all offseason talking

Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis were monsters.

Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were dominant.

Jaelan Phillips: The Howie Roseman Fleece

Two games. Two game-wrecking performances. Jaelan Phillips has arrived and he is glorious. Six QB pressures, a sack, multiple drive-killing plays, and somehow he’s learning this defense on the fly. Howie Roseman may already be forging an extension.

The Eagles Offense is _______.

We’re not pretending everything is fine. The Eagles offense is currently operating like someone is calling plays off a jittery Zoom connection.

  • 272 total yards
  • Seven punts
  • Two drives over 30 yards the entire night

The Eagles are 8-2 and have scored 26 total points in the last two weeks. I don’t know how sustainable this is, but I do know one thing: Thank God for Vic Fangio.

Historic Stuff Is Happening

This is the first time since 1997 the Eagles have won back-to-back games scoring 16 or fewer in both. It’s not pretty. It’s not comforting. It is high anxiety football. But it is winning football.

If the offense figures itself out, even just a little, the rest of the NFC might want to start lighting prayer candles because right now, it’s really difficult to beat the Eagles.

Up Next: At Dallas. Pray accordingly.

unfiltered, opinionated, and certainly do not care if you like it or not.
