Eagles Reporter Showdown: Jeff McLane insists Derrick Gunn’s report is exaggerated

We have some Eagles beat writer in-fighting right now. Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane, our resident finder of every piece of drama within the Birds organization, is claiming that Derrick Gunn’s report about Jalen Hurts is being overblown.

Eagles drama isn’t that big of a deal, according to McLane

For a guy who’s always willing to stir the pot, it’s actually shocking to hear McLane shut this down as fast as he did. He, along with every other beat writer in this city, lives for the petty drama bullshit. If there were really something afoot, trust me — McLane would’ve sniffed it out immediately.

Derrick Gunn is well respected, sure, but let’s not pretend everything he says is gospel. That’s how everyone’s acting after this latest Hurts report, even though he’s been wrong plenty of times. Gunn said Hurts was having the worst training camp he’d ever seen in 2022, before AJ Brown and Lane Johnson hopped on Twitter to call BS. He even floated that Gardner Minshew was poised to be the starter at one point.

No one’s right about everything, and in this case, I’m leaning McLane over Gunn. Part of that is because it’s what I want to believe, no doubt. But we’ve also seen multiple players and coaches shut this stuff down themselves. With this current version of the Eagles, it feels like the “drama” is being blown way out of proportion by the media.

Are there levels of frustration inside the building? Of course — there should be when you’re trying to repeat as champions. Everyone should want to be better. That doesn’t mean NovaCare has turned into hell on Earth and everyone hates each other. Two things can be true at once.
