Oh No: Kevin Patullo listed as a “top candidate” to be hired as a head coach this offseason
Somehow, someway, Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has found himself as a “top candidate” to become a head coach this offseason. No one really knows why or how his name got tossed into the bucket, but here we are.
Kevin Patullo garnering interest to be an HC
This is what NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero wrote about Patullo in his coaches to watch piece:
“A former quarterback and receiver at USF, Kevin Patullo has held all kinds of titles — offensive quality control, QB coach, WR coach, pass game coordinator, associate head coach — and leadership roles since entering the league as a QC with the Chiefs in 2007. He has been on Nick Sirianni’s staff since their days in Indianapolis and has been exposed to all parts of building the program, helping prepare him for whenever his opportunity comes.
Now in his first year as OC, Patullo has faced scrutiny as the Eagles offense has scuffled to find its footing, in a market that can be as tough as any when things aren’t going well. But the Eagles still rank in the top half of the league in scoring (23.4 points per game, 16th), thanks in part to an NFL-best 75% red-zone touchdown percentage, and they sit comfortably atop the NFC East at 8-2. Two of Sirianni’s last three coordinators (Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore) landed head-coaching jobs. If the Eagles keep winning, it only makes sense that teams will at least consider making Patullo the third.“
Look, if any team hires this guy to be their head coach after the season, that’s on them. If the Eagles end up repeating as champs, I guarantee he’ll at least get some interviews, but actually hiring him would be a crazy move — at least with everything we’ve seen thus far.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that the Eagles offense is broken. If you want to blame Jalen Hurts, go for it. I blame the guy who’s calling the plays, calling ineffective route combinations, and routinely putting his players in a position to fail. Hurts isn’t perfect, and the offensive line being beat up doesn’t help, but if you’re being honest with yourself, you know Kevin Patullo is the main culprit for all of this.
The play calling is ass, the offense is about as vanilla as it gets, and he has no idea what his identity is. Kevin Patullo’s saving grace is his league-best 75% red-zone touchdown efficiency. The team also hasn’t reached the red-zone once over the past two weeks, so it’s kind of hard to judge it accurately when they don’t have that many opportunities.
Bottom line, I’d love if he got poached. Unless he turns it around, of course. I just don’t see it happening.
