Union crash out of the playoffs after NYCFC steals a 1-0 win at Subaru Park
The Philadelphia Union’s season is officially dead.
A year that felt like it was building toward another MLS Cup run ended with a brutal 1 to 0 loss to New York City FC in Chester. NYCFC walked into Subaru Park, punched first, and then spent the rest of the night hanging on for dear life while the Union kept slamming their heads into a brick wall.
The Moment It Fell Apart
NYCFC stunned the stadium in the 27th minute. The entire buildup was way too clean and Maxi Moralez finished from close range without anyone laying a hand on him. It was the kind of goal that makes you look around and wonder how this team just sliced through you that easily.
Maxi Moralez killed the Union
The Union actually responded well after that. They fired shot after shot at Matt Freese, who apparently used his time in Philly to learn all of Blake’s superpowers. Freese stood on his head the entire first half and kept the Union out.
Andre Blake’s Injury Was a Nightmare
The real disaster came early in the second half. Nicolás Fernández Mercau tried a long ball from inside his own half that nearly embarrassed Blake. Blake sprinted back, saved the day at the last second, and pulled his hamstring in the process.
He went down behind the net clutching his leg. The entire stadium froze. You could feel the panic settle in. Blake had to come out for Andrew Rick and from that moment on the Union were fighting uphill with one hand tied behind their back.
The Frustration Builds
For the final thirty minutes, the Union threw everything at NYCFC. Constant pressure. Cross after cross. Bodies flying into the box. The entire match took place inside the final third. Freese had the game of his life, denying chance after chance and killing his former team’s season in the process.
Every loose ball bounced the wrong way. Every scramble fell to an NYCFC jersey. Every close call turned into another groan from the crowd. It was one of those nights where the soccer gods made up their minds early.
NYCFC Moves On, Union Go Home
New York City now heads to the Eastern Conference Final to face Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. That is their third trip to the conference final since 2021.
The Union go home. A dominant regular season is over. One of the best defensive units in MLS gave up a single goal and it still wasn’t enough. The attack never found the moment they needed and the season ends in frustration.
At the end of the day, the roster is strong. Bradley Carnell is Coach of the Year. The core will return and the Union will be competitive again.
That does not change the sting of this loss. Not one bit.
Final Score: NYCFC 1, Union 0.
