Sixers get cooked by 41, injury list grows, vibes continue to tank

The Sixers briefly held a lead early in the second quarter, and that was the last pleasant moment of the night. Everything after that was a slow rolling house fire. Philadelphia got blown off the floor by the Magic in a 144-103 humiliation, their worst loss of the season by a mile.

Before Tuesday, their largest loss was by eleven. Orlando handed them a forty-one point reality check and led by as many as forty-six. The Sixers drop to 9-8. Tyrese Maxey led the team with twenty points. Anthony Black scored a career-high thirty-one for the 11 and 8 Magic because of course he did.

The Sixers are running out of bodies

Here is who did not play:

  • Joel Embiid (right knee injury management)
  • Paul George (right ankle sprain)
  • VJ Edgecombe (left calf tightness)
  • Kelly Oubre Jr. (left knee LCL sprain)
  • Adem Bona (right ankle sprain)

Sixers Injury Updates: Embiid close to returning, Maxey banged up, Edgecombe out

Nick Nurse said Embiid was trending in the right direction and even got some work in at shootaround, but he was not cleared. George’s ankle soreness is still being evaluated. Edgecombe remains out, although Nurse said his status is improving.

Then the game actually began and the injury list grew again. Trendon Watford came out firing, scored early, then went down on a fast break with a non-contact injury. He grabbed at his groin and collapsed instantly.

Ruled out at halftime. Concerning as it gets…

Justin Edwards also limped off to the locker room early in the third quarter. He returned later, but anyone watching could tell he was not right.

The defense officially bottomed out

The Sixers tried a zone defense in the first quarter. On paper, it made some sense. Orlando is not a great shooting team. In reality, it was a disaster.

The Magic started 0 for 8 from three, then suddenly realized no one in a white jersey felt like contesting anything. Once the lid came off the rim, the Sixers defense fully melted. The Magic scored fifteen second chance points in the first half.

The Sixers had none. Every missed shot from Philly turned into a Magic fast break. Every turnover turned into a Magic dunk.

Anthony Black knocked down back-to-back threes, nobody bothered to guard him, and Maxey yelled at Andre Drummond for not closing out. Fair question. Drummond then turned the ball over on a post up and Orlando scored instantly on the other end. That was the story of the night.

By halftime, the Sixers were down 80 to 54 and getting booed out of their own building.

A little drama before halftime

Drummond decided to square up in a boxing stance after fouling Wendell Carter Jr. Jalen Suggs shoved him. Jabari Walker jumped in. Security hit the court instantly.

Suggs received two technicals and was tossed. Drummond, Carter, and Walker each got one. It ended quickly, which is disappointing for anyone hoping a fight could at least distract from the scoreboard.

The NBA Cup: “It Just Means More…”

Jared McCain is at least alive again

The bright spot, if you want to call it that, was Jared McCain continuing to look like the prospect the Sixers expected.

He hit multiple threes, attacked off the dribble, and actually looked confident. If the Sixers ever get a healthy roster again, McCain will be a major part of the rotation.

Tyrese Maxey played way too long in a blowout

The Sixers were down more than forty, yet Maxey played almost the entire third quarter. Completely irresponsible from the coaching staff considering the team was already missing half the roster.

Reality check

Some losses are just bad nights. This one was a flashing warning sign. The Sixers are injured, shorthanded, exhausted, and defending like they learned basketball ten minutes before tipoff.

The NBA Cup run is over.

Always next year, right?

The Sixers are now 0-3 in their group and head to Brooklyn on Friday for the final Cup game. If they show up with the same energy they showed Tuesday, it will get ugly again.

This team needs Embiid back. They need George back. They need Edgecombe and Oubre back. They literally need anything resembling a full roster and until then, nights like this are going to keep happening.
