I have no idea how DeVonta Smith didn’t get a defensive pass interference flag on this play.
You can try to sell me the whole “the defender was turned around and playing the ball” explanation, or call it incidental contact, but even that feels like mental gymnastics. I’ve watched football my entire life and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a no-call on something this blatant.
No Flag for DeVonta Smith on a blatant Defensive Pass Interference
I have no idea how this is an offensive pass interference on AJ Brown
DeVonta Smith was coming back for the ball and the defender was in the air already and collided directly into him. Somehow the officials stare directly at it and decide we’re all hallucinating. It’s unbelievable, but somehow perfectly on brand for the kind of clown show we watched on Black Friday.
It brings up the same conversation we’ve been having for years. Should underthrown passes still be “rewarded” with pass interference?
Personally, the answer is yes.
It’s no different than fouling a jump shooter in basketball. You don’t get off the hook just because the shot was bad. A foul is a foul. If a defender panics, grabs, collides, or wipes out a receiver because he’s out of position, that’s on him.
Penalize the defense for bailing out.
This entire game was a disaster. The offense was a mess, the decision-making was worse, and the officiating was right in line with the chaos. At some point you just sit back and ask yourself what exactly we’re doing here because plays like this cannot go uncalled at the professional level.
Add the no-flag on DeVonta Smith to the never-ending pile of reasons Eagles fans left the stadium furious.
