Hornets announcer snaps on Luka Doncic during Lakers game

Let me get this out of the way before any Gen Z kid tries to revoke my hoops expertise credentials: I love Luka Doncic. Love him. One of the most skilled offensive players this league has ever seen. A walking triple-double. A basketball savant.

But I’m also not blind. There are nights, too many nights, where the NBA becomes borderline unwatchable because its biggest stars spend more time auditioning for a courtroom drama than actually getting back on defense. And yes, Luka Doncic is absolutely one of the headliners in that department.

So, even when a Charlotte Hornets announcer finally said the quiet part out loud on Thursday night? I can’t even argue.

You see, the real issue here is that Luka’s whining isn’t shocking anymore. It’s normalized. It’s baked into the product. Stars bark at refs after every miss, every no-call, every breeze that touches their forearm. The game stops. The flow dies. Fans collectively sigh.

This is why I’m so glad the early portion of the NBA season is overlapped with the NFL and College Football, and just when you start to seriously tune into the NBA, we have March Madness. So, thank you to the sports calendar God’s.

Luka is carrying the Lakers

To be clear, Luka Doncic didn’t play poorly. He finished with 39 points on 15-for-26 shooting, stuffing the stat sheet like he always does. The problem? The Lakers were already drowning by the time his frustration boiled over.

They trailed 73-60 when the tech happened, and things only snowballed from there. Charlotte yes, that Charlotte, kept pouring it on and eventually walked out with a 135-117 win that somehow felt even more embarrassing than the score suggests.

I honestly feel bad for Luka, as he has gotten into phenomenal playing shape since being traded by the Mavericks, but this Lakers squad is so handicapped by having an aging Lebron James on the team, that they can’t properly construct it around the young superstar.

Their biggest issue is their defense. And every time I tune into ESPN in the morning, I feel like one clip I am guaranteed to see is Lakers head coach JJ Redick having a breakdown trying to solve their defensive issues.

Maybe they will find a way to make a blockbuster move at the trade deadline and give Lebron one last serious shot at an NBA championship. But, even with that, I don’t see them winning more than a game in a Playoff Series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Or even the San Antonio Spurs for that matter.
