Eagles bring in 33-year-old OC candidate for second interview
Eagles continue to move slowly in their search for a new offensive coordinator, and the latest reported candidate only adds to how unconventional this process has become.
According to multiple reports, the Eagles have interviewed Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion for the job and are bringing him in for a second, in-person interview this week. Mannion previously interviewed virtually, but the follow-up signals legitimate interest as the team works through its options.
Mannion is just 33 years old and is one of the youngest candidates tied to the role so far.
Eagles OC search adds another inexperienced candidate
Mannion has never served as an offensive coordinator at any level, college or professional. He also has no documented play-calling experience. He entered coaching immediately after retiring from the NFL in 2024 and has only two seasons on an NFL staff.
His first season with the Packers came as an offensive assistant. He was then promoted to quarterbacks coach for the 2025 season, where he worked closely with Jordan Love. Love finished the year ranked sixth in the NFL in passer rating at 101.2, which appears to be the primary reason Mannion has gained attention during this hiring cycle.
The Eagles are no strangers to promoting coaches without prior coordinator experience, but that approach has recently backfired. The team has dismissed its last two offensive coordinators who were elevated without previous play-calling duties, most recently Kevin Patullo following the 2025 season.
Eagles connected to McVay coaching tree again
As a player, Mannion was a third-round pick in 2015 out of Oregon State and spent eight seasons as a journeyman backup quarterback. He played for the Rams, Vikings, and Seahawks, appearing in 14 career games with just two starts. Much of his career was spent on practice squads or as a reserve.
Those stops matter because of who coached him. Mannion played under Sean McVay with the Rams, Kevin O’Connell with the Vikings, and Shane Waldron with the Seahawks. He is currently on Matt LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay. All four coaches come from the McVay coaching tree, making it likely that Mannion’s offensive philosophy aligns closely with that system.
Eagles still weighing upside vs experience
Mannion is a high-upside, low-experience option for a team that remains undecided on what direction it wants to take offensively. While his résumé is thin, his exposure to successful offensive systems and recent quarterback development work appear to be driving interest.
For now, the Eagles continue to expand their candidate pool as the search stretches deeper into the offseason. Mannion is the latest name added to the list, and his upcoming in-person interview suggests the team is at least willing to seriously consider another young, first-time coordinator candidate.
