Rat Behavior: Eileen Gu is a traitor to America and deserves no sympathy
Olympic skier and known CCP asset Eileen Gu has made headlines in Milan after faltering to a silver medal in her event. The American-born, Stanford-educated Olympian emerged as a controversial figure when she elected to represent China at the 2022 Games in Beijing.
This is, of course, an outrage. We wrote about it extensively here at The Liberty Line. We’re a sports blog headquartered in the birthplace of this country – The Fighting City of Philadelphia – so matters of patriotic importance are a central part of our coverage.
Gu’s initial decision was problematic enough. An American kid, raised on American slopes, trained by American coaches, educated at an American university, then switching flags the second the money and exposure got bigger. That didn’t sit right with a lot of fans, and it still doesn’t.
But Eileen Gu’s standing with the American public took a nose dive when she tried to claim both nations after her loss, something she soundly rejected when she cozied up with Xi Jinping:
I’ve never been so happy to see an American lose.

Yeah… how about no? I think I speak for the majority of Americans with brain cells when I say we do not fuck with you like that. That loss was solely for the Honorable Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party. It has nothing to do with us.
Let’s be honest. The United States didn’t need Eileen Gu to stay relevant in skiing. It would’ve been nice to have her represent her homeland, of course, but she and her mother chased the bag.
So, forgive me for not feeling outwardly sympathetic for this woman when she comments on domestic issues going on within the country she turned her back on. I want to say I’m being dramatic, but that’s quite literally what happened.

I have no issues with athletes speaking out about what they believe in. This isn’t a “stick to sports” issue for me. Instead, it’s a mind your own business thing. You can’t reject the US and then continue to speak as if you represent us. That just doesn’t fly.
This reminds me of a classic Soviet joke that really does apply almost exactly to this situation:
An American tells a Russian that people in the USA have freedom of speech and that he could even go to the White House and shout: “Go to hell, Ronald Reagan!”
The Russian answers: “Oh, we also have freedom of speech. I, too, can go to the Kremlin and shout:” Go to hell, Ronald Reagan!”
That’s essentially what we’re watching play out. The only difference is that she’s both a US citizen and a communist in this scenario. I’d like to see her criticize the Chinese government and let me know how that goes.
In fairness, $23 million in advertising deals is enough to make the smartest person make themselves look stupid. Even folks in China are skeptical of her, taking her Chinese name Gu Ailing and editing it to Gu Aiqian, which translates to “Gu loves money.”
And look, she can choose whoever she wants to ski for. She didn’t break any laws. But choices come with consequences. When you trade the country that built your career for one that wants to use your career for publicity on the international stage, people are going to talk about it.

Shockingly good take.
