WATCH: Cavan Sullivan gets a red card at the end of Union’s 2-2 draw with Inter Miami
A fight broke out near the end of the Union’s 2-2 draw with Inter Miami on Wednesday night, and it ended with our guy 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan getting a red card for sticking up for his brother. I couldn’t be more proud. That’s exactly the kind of edge you want from the future of American soccer.
Cavan Sullivan: Dawg
Everything started after Cavan’s brother, Quinn Sullivan, got taken down inside the box. Cavan Sullivan wasn’t about to let that slide, and both he and Miami’s Yannick Bright ended up with red cards for going at it after the fact. Cavan Sullivan watched his brother get dumped in the box and immediately went to war over it. That’s a badge of honor.
Cavan Sullivan vs Yannick Bright
Cavan Sullivan already made MLS history as the youngest player to ever appear in a game, debuting as a 14-year-old back in 2024 and setting a North American sports record. The kid is a generational talent, one of the brightest young prospects American soccer has ever produced, and he’s already got the competitive fire and the family loyalty to go with the skill.
Yannick Bright tried to follow Cavan Sullivan to the locker room LOL
There Is A Downside…
Now, there is a real cost to the ejection, and it stings a bit. The red card forces Cavan Sullivan to miss Philadelphia’s clash with Austin FC on Saturday, and that’s a genuine blow to a Union side that’s leaned on him heavily as a consistent starter under interim manager Ryan Richter.
Bright will also be out for Miami’s Saturday match against Toronto, so at least it cuts both ways.
In 18 matches, he’s tallied a goal and seven assists, and he’s been especially sharp lately, racking up three assists in his last three appearances heading into Wednesday. Losing that kind of production for a game hurts, no question, especially for a Union team that’s been clawing its way back up the table.
The Sullivan Brothers Are DEMONS
Wouldn’t Change A Thing…
Here’s the bottom line, though. Yeah, the suspension is a bummer, and losing a playmaker like Cavan Sullivan for a match isn’t ideal but I’m not going to sit here and criticize a 16-year-old for having his brother’s back.
That’s the good stuff. That’s the kind of loyalty, toughness, and fire that this city runs on, and it’s exactly what you want from the guy who’s supposed to be the face of American soccer for the next 15 years.
Cavan Sullivan is a straight-up dawg.
The future of US Soccer. Philly through and through. Our guy, and he’s not taking shit from anybody. You mess with his brother, you’re going to hear about it, red card be damned. That’s a mentality you can’t teach, and it’s exactly the kind of edge that makes you fall in love with a player.
Serve the one-game suspension, come back Saturday after next with a chip on your shoulder, and keep being exactly who you are. This city loves a competitor, and Cavan Sullivan along with his brother Quinn, just showed everyone he’s got the dawg in him to go with the once-in-a-generation talent.
