Eagles-Chargers Week 9: Preview, odds, and predictions

After a blowout win on the road last week against the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles hope to continue their hot streak at home today against the Los Angeles Chargers. LA is currently 4-3 coming off a loss to the New England Patriots. There are a lot of ties between these two teams, and a win today could give the Eagles the push they need to return to playoff contention.
Nick Sirianni and Shane Steichen were both former coaches for the Chargers and brought on former Chargers wideout Eddie Royal as a coaching intern during training camp. According to reports, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley declined an interview for the Eagles job this offseason due to Howie Roseman’s presence.
If the Eagles want to win, they will need to continue a variation of their game plan last week. Los Angeles has an even worse rushing defense than the Lions, but their offense is far better, so a pure running offense might not be enough for the Eagles.
Justin Herbert was having an MVP caliber season to start the year but slowed down over the last few weeks. Jonathan Gannon switched things up on defense but remained in that soft coverage while sending blitzes, but it worked to perfection. New England succeeded by sending pressure to Herbert consistently, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Philadelphia followed in their footsteps.
Davion Taylor and T.J. Edwards did pretty well in the starting role last week and should be able to continue that against the Chargers’ run defense. Herbert is a phenomenal quarterback, and it’s possible he could attack them for short yardage like Derek Carr and several others have.
The Eagles can stay in this game, but it relies on the coaching far more than the talent on the field this week. Los Angeles has significant holes in their schemes on both sides of the field, and if Sirianni and Gannon exploit them as they should, Philadelphia should have a good chance at securing a win.
Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |

Chargers | -1.5 (-110) | -122 | U 49.5 (-112) |
It’s going to be a close game and will likely be a high-scoring game no matter the outcome. Parx Sportsbook has boosted odds from +148 to +200 for the Eagles to Score 25+ Points & to Win vs. the Chargers. With how weak their rush defense is, I highly recommend riding with that bet this afternoon.
