Darren Sproles confirms he approached Carson Wentz about his sour attitude during 2017 Super Bowl run

Former Eagles QB Carson Wentz was integral to Philadelphia’s championship run in 2017.

Before an ACL tear prematurely ended his season, Wentz was on his way to becoming league MVP.

Carson Wentz 2017 stats (13 games)

  • 60.2% comp.
  • 3,296 passing yards
  • 101.9 passer rating
  • 33 TDs, 7 INTs
  • 11-2 record

Under Wentz, the Eagles secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC, earning them a first-round bye in the postseason. Backup QB Nick Foles took it from there, leading Philadelphia to their first Super Bowl title in franchise history.

While the Eagles were embarking on the playoff run of a lifetime, Wentz apparently wasn’t too thrilled with Foles stealing the spotlight. Previous reports had made note of Wentz voicing his displeasure with the team’s success to his injured teammates, including veteran running back Darren Sproles.

Sproles confirmed those reports during a recent appearance on the Up & Adams Show, stating that he had to “have a conversation” with Wentz prior to the NFC Championship Game vs. Minnesota.

“We had some words, but it wasn’t as big as what everybody was saying. I had to make him realize that you gotta be happy for the team. We’re all mad that we’re not playing; we’re all hurt, but you still gotta be happy for the team. He [Wentz] was walking around quiet, but after that conversation, that all kinda changed.”

Sproles also mentioned that Wentz is a great player but needs to “take coaching better” and “needs a good tight end” to be successful — hinting at Wentz’ rumored favoritism towards Zach Ertz in the offense.

Wentz and Sproles appeared to have squashed whatever beef there was at the time, but the former’s attitude was an early indicator of things to come.

After a historical decline in performance (and alleged tension with rookie QB Jalen Hurts), the Eagles moved on from Wentz three years later, trading him to Indianapolis for draft picks. Wentz wore out his welcome there as well and was sent to Washington after just one season, where he is in danger of being unseated by 5th-year QB Taylor Heinicke.

Now, onto more pressing matters — can Darren Sproles come back and return kicks for us?
