New Eagles cornerback Greedy Williams explains the origin of his unique first name

After signing with the Eagles last week, CB Greedy Williams instantly claimed his throne as the best football name on the team. I’ll argue that Nakobe Dean still gives Greedy a run for his money, but that’s neither here nor there.

On Tuesday, Williams was introduced to the Eagles media at the NovaCare Complex. Among other things, Williams was asked about the origin of his unique first name, which he credited to his aunt.

“She passed away in 2022. She gave me the name Greedy at a young age, six months,” Williams explained. “She said I was drinking a lot of milk. She just came up with ‘Greedy Deedy,’ but my mom left the Deedy out, and I’ve been Greedy since.”

So, Greedy isn’t his birth name? That’s a little disappointing, but I do appreciate an unmatched nickname. I mean, it’s kind of the perfect name for a cornerback, no? Every corner should be a little greedy out there. Williams tries to embody that with his play.

“Got to get them picks, man,” Williams said. “That’s what we’re pushing for. Keep that name alive, make plays, and make the fans happy. Make everyone happy.”

Interceptions do make people happy. Hard to argue that.

Although Williams will enter a cornerback room with three starters solidified in their roles, he has a real opportunity to learn and develop behind two Pro Bowl veterans in James Bradberry and Darius Slay. At just 25 years old, Williams still has a long, productive NFL career ahead of him. It’ll be exciting watching what he has in store for 2023.

  1. Great post! It’s always interesting to hear the stories behind player’s unique names. It’s cool to hear that Greedy’s name was given to him by his aunt, even if it wasn’t his birth name. I agree that it’s a perfect name for a cornerback. My question for you is, do you think Greedy has what it takes to become a starter in the Eagles’ cornerback room?
