Crisis Averted: NFL insiders were ‘convinced’ Russell Wilson was coming to Philadelphia last offseason
The status quo in the NFL changes on a year to year basis – especially at the quarterback position. Take Russell Wilson for example. A year ago, he was the consensus top QB on the market. Now, he’s seen as a reclamation project for Denver’s new head coach Sean Payton.
If you’ll recall, there was a lot of chatter about Wilson bringing his talents to Philadelphia around this time last year.
I’ll be honest, I was one of the idiots who wanted to trade for him. For this instance and this instance alone, I’ll gladly say I was on the wrong side of history. It was gross how much I wanted him here. Truly deplorable behavior from me.
As it turns out, my wishes almost came true – or at least several NFL insiders believed it was bound to happen. On a recent episode of Joey Mulinaro’s podcast, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport admitted that during last year’s scouting combine, he was led to believe either the Eagles or Washington Commanders would trade for Wilson.

Rapoport on Russell Wilson to Philly rumors
“There were times last year I was pretty convinced, at the combine, that either the Eagles or Commanders were going to trade for Russell Wilson,” Rapoport said. “Now, it turned out that wasn’t something [Wilson] was into, he was only into going to the Broncos.”
In hindsight, it’s wild that Wilson was the one who didn’t want to come to Philly and it wasn’t the other way around. At the time I guess it made sense, but God damn was it bad judgement from Wilson’s camp.
Just imagine how shitty this past Eagles season would have been if this trade went down.
- No Jalen Hurts MVP campaign
- No AJ Brown trade
- Probably don’t have the capital to acquire guys like James Bradberry or CJ Gardner-Johnson late in the offseason
- Probably miss the playoffs and are stuck with a 34-year-old Russell Wilson
- Nick Sirianni probably gets fired
- The Eagles are back at square one
Again, it just goes to show how much the perception of players and teams can change in one year.
The Eagles are sitting pretty fresh off a Super Bowl appearance with two first-round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Broncos are desperately hoping Payton can make Wilson a viable quarterback again.
Thank God Russell Wilson decided to go to Denver.
