Preview: Phillies open up 3-game set vs. the San Francisco Giants

Following yesterday’s bizarre series finale at Coors Field, the Phillies open up a 3-game series vs. the struggling San Francisco Giants tonight at 9:45 EST.
Tonight’s Starting Pitchers
- Connor Brogdon ((2-0, 2.61 ERA)
- Alex Wood (0-0, 2.45 ERA)
Yesterday’s loss bumped the Phillies back down to .500, as the team logged seven hits but couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position. Aaron Nola didn’t have his best stuff, allowing six hits and four earned runs through seven innings, striking out four on 102 pitches.
The big headline was obviously the brawl that took place in the middle of the seventh inning after loser reliever Jake Bird talked way too much smack to the entire Phillies dugout. Bryce Harper wasn’t taking that from anybody, and he charged right at Bird, who proceeded to walk back to the dugout like a baby.
Here’s what Harper, Schwarber, Thomson, and Bird had to say about what went down.
The Phils will roll with an opener for tonight’s game, as Connor Brogdon will start in place of Bailey Falter. Falter has obviously struggled over the last few weeks, and the Phils seem to have lost a bulk of their confidence in the lefty compared to the beginning of the season.
His start was skipped in Colorado this weekend with the return of Ranger Suarez, and the team wants his innings to come in the middle of tonight’s game. Luckily for the Phillies, Connor Brogdon has been great to start the season, holding a 2.61 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
The Phillies’ offense has started to pick it up over the last week, as they’ve scored 29 runs in the last five games (minus Sunday’s matinee). Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper have led the way, but the entire team will need a good effort tonight with Alex Wood on the mound.
Phillies Notable Player Stats @ SF Giants
- Bryce Harper: .229 BA, 8 hits, 2 HRs, 6 RBIs (10G)
- JT Realmuto: .310 BA, 9 hits, 2 HRs, 6 RBIs (10G)
- Kyle Schwarber: .250 BA, 3 hits, 1 2B (3G)
- Bryson Stott: .455 BA, 5 hits, 1 HR, 1 RBI (3G)
Thairo Estrada has led the way for San Fran in 2023, hitting .314 with 5 HRs, 14 RBIs, and an .854 OPS. Michael Conforto leads the Giants in home runs with 7, while J.D Davis holds the RBI lead with 22.
The Giants sit at 17-23 on the season, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by 8.5 games in the NL West. They’re 10-10 at Oracle Park while holding a total run differential of -27.
Phillies Starting Lineup
Connor Brogdon vs. Alex Wood
Connor Brogdon makes just the second start of his career tonight, serving as an opener for Bailey Falter. Brogdon has been fantastic for the Phillies in the bullpen this season, tallying a 2.61 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances. Connor has allowed just three earned runs since April 11th while holding a 1.16 WHIP.
Brogdon has been specifically great on the road, which has been a common trend throughout his career, holding a 1.59 ERA in eight appearances with just two earned runs allowed.
Alex Wood makes his first start since returning from a left hamstring strain that sidelined him for a month. Wood holds a 2.45 ERA on the year with a 1.64 WHIP in 11 innings with 11 hits allowed and 12 strikeouts.
