Eagles News: Lane Johnson eyeing retirement after recent contract extension expires in 2026

Lane Johnson has put together a Hall of Fame career as the anchor of the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line for the past several years. Even at 33 years old, you’d be hard pressed to find a better right tackle in the NFL right now.
Following the loss in Super Bowl 57, Johnson underwent surgery to repair his torn adductor muscle and had to endure a 10-12 week rehab period. He told reporters on Tuesday that he feels great and has been cleared to play for some time now.
Johnson played through the injury during the postseason and still looked like his All-Pro self, allowing zero sacks or QB hits on 100 pass blocking reps. Getting a fully healthy Johnson back on the field should get every Eagles fan excited. What’s not so exciting, however, is the fact that Johnson is eyeing retirement after his new contract extension expires in 2026.
In March, Johnson agreed to a one-year, $33 million extension with the Eagles. The move freed up approximately $10M in cap space this offseason while keeping Johnson under contract through 2026.
After telling the Eagles media how great he felt following his rehab, he also stated that he envisions this latest extension to be his last in the NFL.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has flirted with the idea of retirement. During the 2022 season, Johnson spoke about mental health at a small local event in Philadelphia. There, he told attendees that he’d like to play, “maybe two more years,” after the 2022 campaign.
After the 2026 season, Johnson will be 36 years old, a reasonable age to hang up the cleats. Even getting to that point as an offensive tackle is impressive, especially when you consider the amount of injuries Johnson has dealt with throughout his career.
It’ll be a sad day when Johnson walks away from the sport. He’ll likely go down as the best tackle in Eagles history and should be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
While I’d love to see Johnson in an Eagles uniform forever, I’d rather see him walk away on his own accord than stick around a few more years just to see his play drop off a cliff. We all saw what happened with Jason Peters.
