Last Minute Eagles NFL Mock Draft with 3 TRADES in 5 ROUNDS
Draft weekend is upon us, and after studying a library of mock drafts and college tape, it’s time to overreact or under-react to the 2024 Eagles Draft Selections. I have one more Eagles mock draft to get the juices flowing before the three-day-long NFL job fair.
This year’s class is loaded at offensive tackle and wide receiver. Even though both are positions of need, Howie must find cornerstones to rebuild this secondary.
Sydney Brown showcased his talents during his rookie campaign before his injury, and Reed Blankenship remains serviceable, but depth behind veterans Darius Slay and James Bradberry remains vital.
Speaking of veterans, Lane Johnson enters his 12th season with the Eagles, and while an heir is needed, next year’s class also provides a handful of potential first-round talents at tackle.
Recent reports say Howie intends to move up from the 22nd spot to potentially target Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold or a potential tackle who can play right guard next season before taking over Lane’s spot.
The price tag to move up for the highly rated prospect seems steep, and there’s another cornerback in my Eagles mock draft who could thrive in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.
EAGLES MOCK DRAFT TRADE #1:
Eagles send picks #22 and #53 to the Colts for picks #15, #82, and 2025 Round 4 pick
(Eagles now have draft picks in rounds 1-7 in 2025)
1.15 DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa (6-1, 203 lbs)
An elite natural athlete with exceptional footwork and burst combined with his high football IQ, Cooper seems like the perfect player for Vic Fangio’s versatile defense.
DeJean played mostly outside cornerback at Iowa, but his ability to play in the slot, in the box, or deep makes him one of the most intriguing draft prospects this year. Personally, I’ll take the Big-Ten Defensive Back of the Year, who can play three positions and help in the return game over a boom-or-bust cornerback in the first round.
2.50 DB Javon Bullard, Georgia (5-11, 198 lbs)
This was the toughest pick in the Eagles mock draft, given some of the other depth concerns, but another Georgia Bulldog heads to Philadelphia in a double-dip secondary scenario. After winning defensive MVP in both of Georgia’s playoff games during their 2022 championship run, Bullard returned to play safety instead of his normal slot cornerback position. The defensive back brings a fiery mentality to any unit, and once again, his versatility to play several positions should entice the Eagles’ front office.
EAGLES MOCK DRAFT TRADE #2:
Eagles send pick #82 (from Colts) to Patriots for #103 and 2025 Round 3 pick
(Eagles now with 8 picks in 2025 draft)
4.103 IOL Christian Mahogany, Boston College (6-3, 314 lbs)
Tyler Steen performed admirably during his time at right guard, but inviting more competition and depth to the offensive line is necessary, given the current roster. Mahogany is a bully in the run game, with his stout, barrel-chested frame driving bodies into the turf. Also, he ranked 5th among all guards with an athleticism score of 86 and third with a total score of 79 at the combine. Despite his pass protection being somewhat inconsistent, Mahogany reminds me of a young Brandon Brooks after he graduates from Jeff Stoutland University.
Christian “The Mauler” Mahogany #73 Highlights
4.120 WR Brenden Rice, Southern Cal (6-2, 208 lbs)
Many Eagles fans expect a legacy pick in the form of Jeremiah Trotter Jr. out of Clemson, but he is the son of Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice. His son, Brendan, caught 12 touchdowns for the Trojans last season and provides a “go up and get it†type player to fortify the Eagles’ wide receiver unit. He’s one of the best run-blocking receivers in this year’s class and took 41 of 288 snaps from the slot.
While not necessarily a deep threat, Rice is a smooth and clever route runner, using his vast knowledge of releases, routes, and hand technique to create separation with ease. His name certainly comes with high expectations, but Rice’s high football IQ and ability to win routes make him a high-floor prospect.
EAGLES MOCK DRAFT TRADE #3:
Eagles send picks #171 and #210 to Saints for picks #150 and #293
5.120 LB Cedric Gray, UNC (6-2, 234 lbs)
Despite bringing in Devin White, Zack Baun, and Oren Burks, plus the return of Nakobe Dean, the Eagles still need youthful linebacker depth. Off-ball linebackers are hard to come by in this year’s draft, but Cedric Gray’s sideline-to-sideline speed and athleticism make him an intriguing addition to the consistently struggling unit.
Gray finished with over 100 tackles in all three seasons for the Tar Heels, but his lighter frame gets him trouble when holding a gap. At this year’s combine, Cedric ranked 1st amongst all linebackers with a production score of 86, and that speed at linebacker is something coaches dream about. Now, they just have to hone it.
5.161 OT Christian Jones, Texas (6-5, 306 lbs)
Jones might not be the heir apparent to Lane Johnson, but he can become a serviceable backup swing tackle after a summer or two at Jeff Stoutland University. Jones did not start playing football until his junior season of high school but quickly became a balanced and powerful offensive tackle with his long arms and wingspan.
His vice grip for hands makes for a solid foundation to build off, given that the rest of his game is relatively raw to compete at the next level. However, more offensive line depth and versatile playmakers are the goals in this Eagles mock draft, and Jones could become the next starting right tackle in Philadelphia by maintaining his work ethic and adding some NFL weight.
