WATCH: Kevin Durant & Chris Paul fight for the entirety of Suns vs. Spurs game—a flashback to the NBA we all once loved
If you know ball, then you probably understand that Kevin Durant and Chris Paul go way back in the world of basketball from previous teammates and Olympic gold medalists. If you just tuned into last night’s game between the Suns and Spurs however, you’d think they have been sworn enemies since birth.
Things Got Heated—Fast
It didn’t take long for the tension to boil over. Midway through the first half, Durant had the ball poked away on an entry pass attempt. Instead of brushing it off, KD started clapping—hard—and barking at Paul.
Classic CP3 wasn’t taking the bait. Instead, he pulled his teammate De’Aaron Fox between them like a human shield before throwing a finger in Durant’s direction.
Refs weren’t having it. Both Kevin Durant & Chris Paul would get hit with technicals

The beef didn’t stop there. According to Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic, Durant and Paul kept jawing as they headed into the tunnel. So much so that Suns assistant coaches had to physically redirect Durant toward the locker room.
For the record, the Spurs were in control for most of the half and went into the break up 60-54. But let’s be honest—everyone was more locked in on the drama than the scoreboard.
At 39 years old, CP3 hasn’t lost a step in one department—getting under people’s skin. Whether it’s sneaky elbows, well-timed flops, or his favorite weapon (trash talk), he lives rent-free in the minds of his opponents. And Durant? He’s not the type to let that slide.
Durant even at the age of 36 is still an elite bucket-getter and an elite trash- talker. He’s gone at it with everyone from Draymond Green to Joel Embiid. But what makes this situation wild is that these two were just teammates on the Suns last season. Before that, they ran together on Team USA, winning gold at the 2012 Olympics.
On Thursday none of that mattered. This is exactly the stuff we want to see as basketball fans. Especially us who grew up in the era’s of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. Fans who know what real basketball is, ya know?
We should all be applauding and celebrating KD
Say what you want about Kevin Durant, but at least he’s not out here trying to be best friends with everyone. He talks trash, gets in people’s faces, and actually cares about the competition. That’s what makes basketball fun.
Meanwhile, you’ve got LeBron dapping up his opponents mid-game, cracking jokes, and acting like he’s hosting a summer BBQ instead of playing in an NBA game. The league needs more villains, more real rivalries—more guys like KD who aren’t afraid to stir the pot. Because let’s be real, the NBA is just better when there’s a little bad blood.
You really have to feel for KD—the Phoenix Suns have been nothing short of a disappointment. After last night’s loss, they dropped to three games under .500 on the season.
Which is a shame. And what’s even worse is that all the LeBron fanboys on social media will use this as an opportunity to paint Durant as some kind of toxic teammate or franchise killer—which simply isn’t true.
When it’s all said and done, KD will be recognized as a top-10 player of all time. He’s one of the few players who truly challenged LeBron James for his throne as the best basketball player in the world for a solid 3-5 year stretch. Yes, you read that correctly. But that’s a conversation for another day.
