Washington Commanders FedEx Field RFK

Washington Commanders are finally getting a new stadium after a laundry list of issues at FedEx Field, including the attempted murder of Jalen Hurts

Good news for NFL players everywhere — the Washington Commanders are getting a new stadium that (hopefully) won’t try to kill your quarterback.

Josh Harris, who ironically killed the Philadephia 76ers, and the Commies are teaming up with the District of Columbia to build a brand-new $3 billion stadium on the old RFK site. Here’s the official hype video, because of course there’s a hype video.

Details are still trickling in from Monday morning’s press conference, but the basics are:

  • Private investment expected around $2.7 billion.
  • Public money will cover about 25% of the total project (mostly for infrastructure and surrounding area).
  • Roof included. (Finally.)
  • 90 acres of mixed-use development.
  • Projected opening: 2030 — so five more miserable years in Landover.

Honestly? It’s long overdue. RFK had history, but it was falling apart faster than Daniel Snyder’s reputation.

FedEx Field is basically held together with zip ties and duct tape. Between the sewage pipes exploding, the guardrails collapsing onto Jalen Hurts, and general “third-world soccer stadium” vibes, it’s amazing they made it this far without someone launching a full federal investigation.

This move back to the District feels right. The Commies played their best football at RFK from the 60s through the 90s. Then they left for suburban hell, and everything that could go wrong… did go wrong.

The Josh Harris Sidebar

What’s interesting is how this new stadium project overlaps with Josh Harris’ other sports properties — namely the Sixers and the whole 76 Place debacle back in Philly.

Does Josh Harris care more about the Commanders than the Sixers? The answer is obviously yes. Daryl Morey, fresh off a dumpster fire of a season as the GM of the 76ers held his own presser with Nick Nurse announcing his return. Joshua Harris? No where to be found.

Remember — Harris owns the Commies solo at the top, while the Sixers are part of Harris-Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. David Blitzer is heavily involved with the Sixers. He’s barely a footnote with the Washington Commanders. David Adelman (who bought Michael Rubin’s Sixers shares) isn’t tied to the NFL side at all.

So when Harris had to pick where he wanted to really put his money and energy — Commies or 76 Place — it’s starting to feel pretty obvious which one he prioritized but it doesn’t really matter because you’ll never get an honest answer out of the ownership group.

In the end, this is good for the league. Good for the Washington Commanders. Good for anyone who’s tired of watching games played in a dump where half the stadium empties into the parking lot before halftime. Let’s just hope that this time around, the Eagles (and the rest of the NFL) can visit D.C. without needing tetanus shots or signing liability waivers.

Five more years at FedEx. Good riddance.
