Eagles Mac Mcwilliams

Eagles may have found a surprise starting nickel corner in fifth-round rookie

The Eagles might’ve stumbled into a real solution at nickel corner, and his name is Mac McWilliams.

Coming into training camp, the plan was clear: Cooper DeJean, a budding superstar, would man the slot while second-rounder Andrew Mukuba rotated at safety. But injuries, rotations, and a little rookie spark might force the coaching staff to reshuffle their hand.

And honestly? That might be a good thing.

Eagles Rookie Mac McWilliams Is Forcing the Issue

Don’t let the “fifth-round rookie” label fool you — Mac McWilliams is earning every snap. The UCF product has been thrown into the fire early. Outside corner, nickel, dime packages — you name it, he’s seen it already.

Now, with Mukuba nursing a shoulder injury, the Eagles have been using McWilliams in the dime while DeJean shifts around to cover more ground. But here’s the thing: Mac doesn’t look out of place. He’s sticky in coverage, physical at the line, and just had a red zone pass breakup on 6’6″ Johnny Wilson, despite giving up a full eight inches in height.

That’s not luck. That’s football IQ, confidence, and grit — three things Vic Fangio just so happens to value above all else.

Letting DeJean Play Full-Time Safety Might Be the Move

If McWilliams continues stacking quality reps in the slot, it opens the door for something that seemed off-limits just a week ago: Cooper DeJean playing full-time safety.

DeJean is elite no matter where you put him, but at safety, his range, instincts, and closing speed become a game-changer. He’s a natural ballhawk. Letting him patrol centerfield while McWilliams holds it down at nickel might be the best version of this defense, especially early in the season while Mukuba gets right.

It’s rare for a fifth-rounder to shift the depth chart this quickly, but the Eagles don’t care where you were drafted — they care if you can ball. So far, Mac McWilliams is doing just that.

If things keep trending this way, don’t be surprised if McWilliams grabs the starting nickel role by Week 1. The Eagles secondary was already full of young talent, now it looks even deeper.
