Report: Commanders will be without their top cornerback in Week 1 matchup vs. Eagles

We’re less than two weeks out from Week 1 of the NFL regular season. The Commanders will travel to Philly for a 4:25 kickoff against the Eagles, and they’ll be without some of their key starters.

First we have Laremy Tunsil, Washington’s All-Pro tackle. He suffered a torn tricept during camp and is expected to miss the majority of the 2026 season. Then, as teams across the league set their initial 53-man rosters, we learned Washington’s top cornerback, Trey Amos, will be placed on IR to begin the season.

Commanders will be limping into their Week 1 matchup vs. the Eagles

The Commanders have placed CB Trey Amos and RB Jeremy McNichols on injured reserve with a designation to return.

Laremy Tunsil and Johnny Newton will surely hit IR as soon as tomorrow.

Week 1 is always a crapshoot. Every team is on a level playing field, anything can happen. There’s still no excuse for the Eagles here. They’ve had an up-and-down training camp with three pretty terrible preseason performances, all resulting in losses. There’s only one way to get people on board this year, and that’s with a decisive victory in Week 1.

Championships are never won in September. Nevertheless, given the circumstances entering Week 1 for both the Commanders and Eagles, this is a statement game for Philly. You simply cannot lose to a battered Commanders team right out the gates.
