Report: Eagles trade TE Zach Ertz to Arizona Cardinals

In a bombshell trade, the Eagles have acquired CB Tay Gowan and a 5th-round pick from Arizona in exchange for TE Zach Ertz.

The Eagles were reportedly taking calls on both Ertz and Dallas Goedert, even though the team was never inclined to move the 4th-year tight end. Ertz leaves the franchise just 10 catches shy of Harold Carmichael for the franchise reception record.

The Eagles were actively shopping the veteran tight end last offseason as there was presumably bad blood between him and GM Howie Roseman. Those issues were seemingly rectified as Ertz returned to the team and was a focal point of the offense for Jalen Hurts this season.

CB Tay Gowan — who opted out of the 2020 season — was a 6th-round pick out of UCF in the 2021 draft. PFF had Gowan — 6’2″, 185 pounds — listed as #69 on its top-100 players in the draft.

Gowan gave up just 20 receptions on 50 targets in 2019, allowing a 26.6 passer rating when targeted, the best in the country. He’ll give the Eagles a young, developmental corner with size and playmaking ability.

Ertz played the final game of his Eagles career Thursday night, catching four passes for 29 yards and a TD. He was sent out as a captain for the coin toss and was visibly emotional after the game.

Ertz will go down in history as one of the greatest players to don midnight green, catching the game-winning TD in the Super Bowl and breaking the single-season record for receptions in 2018.

The veteran now heads to the desert, where he’ll be a part of a contending team led by MVP candidate Kyler Murray. The Eagles will look to move forward with emerging tight end Dallas Goedert, who they hope the secure long-term.
